Inform with Accuracy. Report with Care.

Journalists shape public understanding of mental health and suicide. Responsible reporting can reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking and prevent suicide contagion, while unethical coverage may negatively influence the health outcomes of those who are vulnerable or at risk of suicide. This hub offers guidelines, expert insights, and ethical reporting guidance to support accurate, compelling storytelling that positively impacts society.
Ethical Reporting And Why It Matters
Ethical reporting on suicide and mental health can save lives. Ethical coverage ensures that information is accurate, and free from sensationalism, encouraging help-seeking behaviors rather than distress. This section provides guidance for media professionals and public messengers to ensure their messaging is hopeful and impactful.
One of the most studied aspects of suicide is how media coverage impacts this public health matter. Inclusion of stories of thriving and hotline resources can lead people to seek help rather than attempt suicide, while long-running, repetitive, graphic, and prominent coverage can increase the risk of suicide contagion.
There have been over 100 research studies that tell us that they way media covers suicide can increase or decrease the risk of suicide contagion in vulnerable populations.
AFSP also relies on support from our Ethical Reporting Advisory Committee, made up of journalists who have experience across the media spectrum, from broadcast news to data journalism. The committee assists AFSP in revising our ethical reporting guidelines to reflect common challenges journalists may face when reporting on suicide.
